Voters in Switzerland will say whether they approve of three proposals in the referendum that takes place on 9 February, 2014:
- A quote to limit immigration from the European Union
- A federal decree on the financing and expansion of the rail network and
- An initiative on abortion
The latter proposes that abortions are paid for by the mother, rather than health insurance.
In the last referendum, on 24 November, 2013, turnout was 53%, when voters said ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to proposals on tax breaks for people who look after their own children at home, salary caps and motorway tax.
The average turnout for referendums in Switzerland, as of 2011, was 49.2%. Citizens are allowed to call them.
According to Wikipedia, there are no voting machines in Switzerland Votes are counted by hand or by automatic counters in large cities. Voters can make their choice by visiting polling stations or by mail. Four cantons, including Geneva, have developed pilots to allow people to vote via the Internet or via SMS.
