The electoral commission of Peru, called the Oficina Nacional de Procesos Electorales (ONPE), recently approved the legal framework necessary to begin implementing e-voting for binding national elections.
In a document published in a national newspaper -El Peruano-, the ONPE established the criteria to regulate how the technology will be implemented.
Having achieved such remarkable milestone, authorities will now embark on the complicated process of selecting the best technology available and adopting it gradually.
It is important to note that the text leaves open the possibility to also adopt technology to biometrically authenticate voters at the poll centers before casting a ballot. Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia are some Latin American countries that have implemented this type of systems successfully.
Next October 5th, Peru will hold municipal and regional elections. This will be a great opportunity to begin testing technologies.
