Turkey is set to hold its presidential elections this August, the first round on August 10 followed quickly by the second round on August 24. The transcontinental republic sitting on Western Asia and Southeastern Europe  has an estimated 50 million registered voters.

Vying for the country’s top posts are Recep Tayyip Erdogan  (Justice and Development Party),  Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu (Republican Peoples Party), and Selahattin Demirtas (People’s Democratic Party).

The winner of the three-cornered race is selected by a simple majority and will replace incumbent President Abdullah Gul to serve out  a one-time term of five years.

Elections in Turkey are managed by The Supreme Electoral Council, a constitutional body established in 1960 and is composed of a president, six members and four substitute members.
