In 2015, United Arab Emirates (UAB) will conduct its third Federal National Council (FNC) election since this legislative body was formed in 1971. Previous elections –held in 2006 and 2011- represented an important first step towards Emirati democracy.
The FNC is the federal authority of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) formed to represent the general Emirati people. The FNC consist of 40 members, half of which are elected by citizens. The remaining representatives are chosen by rulers of each one of the 7 emirates comprising the union.
Each one of the emirates is represented in the FNC depending on the size of its population. The following chart describes how seats are allocated:
According to Wikipedia, the previous FNC elections -2011- had 129,274 eligible. Turnout was 28%.To prepare for the elections, the National Election Commission (NEC) the UAE held its sixth meeting in Abu Dhabi in November of this year. During the meeting, authorities discussed a tentative timetable for the elections as well as possible amendments to the executive instructions and the estimated budget.
