The executive secretary for Ghana’s National Media Commission, George Sarpong recently urged media outlets to contribute to election administration by improving the quality of information in the electoral process for the media in Kumasi.
Recognizing the crucial role media has in any election, Sarpong stressed the need for honest and unbiased information on the electoral systems, processes and candidate in the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections, to be held on March this year.
He pointed out that the duty of the journalist is to serve citizenry and not their own political preferences. Voters rely on the media for accurate information on candidates while the candidates in turn rely on the media to communicate accurate information about them.
Trust in elections requires a very delicate balance in order for it to grow. And media outlets are an integral part of that ecosystem in question.
